In 1989, I sent my kids to a two week summer sleep-away camp. In a way, this documentary started the day I picked them up from camp. They were so happy and invigorated when they returned that I was a little mystified. Why were they happier at camp than at home? I felt I needed to answer this question. I took many trips to the camp, eventually bringing along a crew to document and explore the camp’s allure. My hope is that this documentary will remind us all what it is to be young and outdoors, thereby safeguarding the experience for future generations.
10 Summers is a feature length documentary about a unique unstructured summer camp for children. The camp exposes urban kids to nature and allows them freedom outdoors, in a tribal and communal setting. The camp was threatened with closure in 2001 but three intrepid campers-turned-counselors refused to let it die. This is their story and the story of why, for so many this camp remains a touchstone, a place of profound meaning and deep satisfaction.
10 Summers looks at that brief period in all our lives – the precious liberated summers of youth.
